Allen W. Smith grew up as one of nine children on an Indiana farm. As an adult, he
has been a factory worker, farmer, high school teacher, college professor, newspaper columnist, and author.
As an economist and
teacher, Allen has been battling economic illiteracy for more than 25 years. His
first book, Understanding Inflation and Unemployment, became an alternate selection of Fortune Book Club when
it was published in 1976. His high school textbook, Understanding Economics,
was published ten years later by Random House and was used by more than 600 schools in 48 states. Dr. Smith's other previous books include Demystifying Economics: The Book that Makes Economics Accessible
to Everyone, and The Alleged Budget Surplus, Social Security, & Voodoo Economics, both published in
2000. From 1990-1993, Smith wrote a syndicated weekly newspaper column on the economy that appeared in 30 newspapers
with a combined circulation of one million. He has published articles on the
economy in the Denver Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Smith taught economics to college students
for 30 years, retiring in 1998 as Professor of Economics at Eastern Illinois University to become a full-time writer. He holds a B.S. in Education degree from Ball State University, and M.A. and Ph.D.
degrees in economics from Indiana University.
As part of Allen's crusade to alert Americans to the problems of Social Security
and the national debt, he has been interviewed on CNN, CNNfn,and CNBC. He has also done more than 150 radio interviews.
